Women over 60 are not having hot flushes for Hormonal reasons it’s for one of these…
5 reasons
1. Uncontrolled Blood Pressure – very common very curable
Most people who know they have blood pressure take their tablets in the morning so if they’re not properly controlled by the evening their tablet has run out & when they’re pressure goes up as they lie down you often get a hot sweat.
Treatment – have the tablets morning & night but split the dose.
Quite often you take their blood pressure in the morning & gives the impression that everything is alright because they’ve just taken their tablets.
2. Thyroid Disease – easy to find easy to cure
Thyroid either or too high or too low can give you hot flushes but their an odd sort of hot flush their not the drenching sweat type but their still uncomfortable, makes it difficult too lose weight – because the thyroid is like the throttle of you car. It controls your metabolism so if it’s too low it causes weight gain.
Treatment – mostly medication but talk to your doctor.
3. Sugar metabolism – very common very curable
Where you get a sudden rush of sugar and your body says No No No and the insulin rushes out and slams the sugar down (after going up) which causes the hot flushes. It typically occurs at night after they’ve had a couple of glasses of wine & dessert.
Drenching sweats at night is very suspicious of the sugar metabolism.
4. Phaeo-chromo-cytoma & carcinoid syndrome – very rare!
*** All need to be looked for – But you wont find them if you don’t look which is why you test and measure everything ***
5. Progesterone is in balance.
Only for women over 60 – it helps with bone density brain function and is an anti proliferative (which means it stops things growing so if you have anything like a little breast cyst or similar that could change, then progesterone is going to be great for things like that).

Thank you for this information – I am getting a blood test asap.
I suffer from Hashimotos disease & whilst I agree it’s easy to diagnose there is – as verified by my consultant endocrinologist – certainly no CURE as you put it and the road to regaining health & wellbeing is for some, certainly NOT an easy one . Also whilst some people do ok on the NHS ‘one size fits all’ synthetic thyroxine , others suffer ongoing symptoms which whilst perhaps not life threatening certainly DO affect their quality of life. Alternatives are hard to come by in the UK & the information available on how to access them is hidden too. Even when thyroid function is allegedly returned to ‘normal ‘ (whatever that is) many people continue to suffer symptoms caused by years of being undiagnosed . It really isn’t helpful to trivialise thyroid disease by saying it’s easy to diagnose & easy to cure.
I am 68 years old and Caucasian, I live in South Africa. I had a hysterectomy at age 35. I started menopause at about 45. I took HRT untill I was 60 then stopped, thinking that it would all be over soon. Was I ever wrong, At 68 I am still suffering chronic night sweats, at least 4 per night. I wake up drenched in sweat and my nerve ends tingling. It is quite disgusting.I do all the correct things, keeping cool etc, but nothing helps. I dont suffer any other effects, my sex life is still great with no dryness at all – much to my husbands delight. Is this going to carry on untill I drop dead (probably from lack of sleep). Is anyone else out there suffering like me, I feel so alone as my doctor dosent take me seriously. He dosent seems to think that I am lucky !!!!!!! Seriously.

I still have mood swings and get over emotional, plus all the weight gain. I hate feeling this weight and my mood swings are terrible. family doctor has no answers.
mood swings, emotional. facial hair, and weight gain, family doctor has no idea what to tell me for help.
I had gastric bypass surgery 14 years ago. A new side effect of this surgery has shown up. It is called fluctuating hypoglycemia. I have this and it causes horrible full-body hot flashes which make me frantic. I get soaking wet. It is caused by the pancreas releasing too much insulin at once. Be aware if you are considering this surgery.
