Our lives are way more complicated than those of our mothers and grandmothers. We are subject to so many more pressures. They would say, in their own defense, that they had no contraception, no washing machines and no mod cons but they had to cope, so why can’t we?
We would say that the world is now full of demands on women. We have to have the perfect family, going to the perfect job each day and helping the perfect husband in his job AND going overseas on holidays with careers and children all blossoming. How realistic is this, truly?
Many families are children with a single parent today, which was not the norm in our grandmother’s time. Women, and some men, are trying hard to raise decent kids, clothed and fed and educated, with a balance of school and sport. ‘Mum’s Taxi’ is a notice that is often seen on the back of family cars. No wonder there are times when everything is too much.
Many of those same women come to me hoping against hope that there is a hormonal imbalance that I can correct easily and they will be able to cope again and do all that they demand of themselves every day. Sometimes, many times, I can. But there are also times when the problem is the demand a woman puts on herself to be all things to everyone.
A recent revelation occurred when just such a would-be wonder woman came to see me, stressed out of her skin with all she was trying to do for her 2 children while her husband was away for weeks at a time working. Not knowing what I could say to this unfortunate woman, I silently asked the Universe for some inspiration that would help her, and I heard ‘The Eye of the Storm’ in my mind, as clearly as if there was someone in the room.
When a cyclone is raging, there is always a quiet spot at the eye of the storm. There the wind dies down, the sound abates, the violent movements settle. They may start up again later but if you can get to the eye of the storm when you are hugely anxious, you can get a break from the wild demands that surround you. At times like these, there is nothing and no-one as important as you and your children. If you take them under your wing and head for a quiet, silent place, like the middle of your big bed, and forget about all the washing up, taxi-driving, school run etc etc, then you will find the eye of the storm and its calm will settle you.
Breathe quietly, read a story, watch a children’s movie and hug your children. Their energy field is strong and innocent and will sustain you like nothing else. We all want to hug new babies, as their energy field is so pure and clean that we all feel the joy of it. We need to find the source of that joy again, and it can only be found in the eye of the storm. Stop and smell the roses, we are told. That is the same advice in another form.
I once worked with a man called Eddie who had a whimsical theory about worrying. He said that half of the things we worry about don’t happen; and half of life’s troubles are unexpected, so you weren’t worrying about them as they came upon you unannounced. The others were not as bad as you thought. So, mathematically, you were worrying just the right amount, but about the wrong things!! So why worry!!
